How to avoid theft

  • If you have a purse or wallet, keep it out of sight, perhaps in an inside pocket in your coat.
  • When you are in very crowded public area, pull your bag round the front, and place your hand over it or better still wear your handbag across your body if you can.
  • When you go to restaurants or café do not leave your handbag on the floor or under tables. Never leave your bag unattended even for a short time.
  • Always consider your location when in a crowded restaurant or café. Select a well lit area for seating.
  • Keep a separate record of your bank, credit card, and personal ID in a safe place. If thieves do get hold of your belongings you can immediately inform the relevant authorities.
  • When you're walking along, try to be aware of your surroundings and what is going on around you.
  • Keep your bags fastened or zipped up, so that no-one can see inside.
  • Keep to main roads and don't use alleyways or shortcuts where you might find yourself vulnerable.
  • If you are withdrawing money from a bank or post office, go inside to do this and make sure your bag is closed before you leave
